A contemporary 3D stained glass sculpture that explores the relationship between light, color, and geometric form. Designed and created by Glass on Hudson, this compact octahedron transforms premium dichroic glass into a luminous architectural object whose appearance continuously shifts with its surroundings.
Light and Color
Constructed from four precision-cut dichroic glass triangles, the sculpture captures and redirects light through its faceted surfaces. As illumination changes throughout the day, vibrant reflections emerge in layers of magenta, green, gold, blue, and violet. The interaction between transparency and iridescence creates an ever-changing visual experience, where color is revealed through both movement and light.
Form and Structure
The octahedron expresses balance through pure geometry. Its symmetrical form creates a sense of lightness while maintaining a strong architectural presence. Each triangular face is carefully aligned to create a unified three-dimensional volume where reflection, transparency, and negative space exist in harmony. Though compact in scale, the sculpture possesses a surprising visual depth as light travels through its interior and across each intersecting plane.
Construction
Unlike my earlier geometric sculptures that emphasized bold black framing, this edition is finished in natural silver. The reflective solder softens the visual boundaries of the form, allowing the dichroic glass itself to become the primary focus. The result is a lighter, more luminous appearance where the structure quietly supports the shifting colors rather than defining them.
Experience
This sculpture responds continuously to its environment. In direct sunlight, the glass produces brilliant iridescent flashes that change with every viewing angle. Under softer daylight or interior lighting, the form becomes more atmospheric, revealing subtle reflections, transparency, and depth within the geometric structure.
Handcrafted Construction
Each octahedron is individually hand-cut, ground, foiled, and assembled using the traditional Tiffany copper foil technique. Premium dichroic stained glass is carefully fitted before being soldered with lead-free silver solder and finished entirely by hand. Every sculpture reflects the subtle variations that are unique to handcrafted work.
